Accommodation in Nassfeld
The Nassfeld-Hermagor region has about 11,000 holiday beds available in everything from 4-star hotels to farmhouse bed and breakfasts.
The main choice is whether to stay at Tropolach, yards from the Millennium Express gondola, or at Sonnenalpe, right in the heart of the skiing. If at Tropolach the choice is principally to stay either at the excellent and luxurious 4-star Falkensteiner Hotel Carinzia, right at the foot of the slopes and yards from the Millennium Express, or the eccentric and budget 3-star Cube Nassfeld.
The Cube is an extraordinary hotel that merges innovative architecture in a unique concept. It is a giant cube and each room is a cube-like pod. It offers drinks and snacks all day and has a lounge on each floor of the building to encourage a community, club-like atmosphere. It knows it is targeting a young clientele who are likely to go in for late nights so a self-service breakfast is available until three in the afternoon! It also prides itself on being ‘gay-friendly’. The location is superb – next to the Falkensteiner and a short step to the gondola.
The 4-star Falkensteiner Hotel Carinzia is known for its personal attention to guests, despite being a large hotel with 160 rooms, and has a fabulous spa area with saunas, massage and meditation rooms. Tropolach also has a number of smaller gasthofs, all of good quality.
At Sonnenalpe, the 4-star Berghof is ski-in ski-out. It is timber-faced and traditional Austrian – a lobby with a log fire, and an impressive spa with saunas, steam bath, solarium and massage rooms. It also specialises in health foods with healthy options at breakfast and dinner. The 4-star Hotel Sonnenalpe is just ten yards from the nearest chairlift and runs a ‘club’ half-board arrangement with table wine, beer and soft drinks as well as tea and coffee included in the price with main meals. This helps keep the cost down so the hotel is very popular with families.
The 4-star Hotel Wulfenia, right on the edge of the piste, is possibly the most prestigious of those in Sonnenalpe with a gourmet restaurant where celebrity chef Arnold Pucher works his magic at the highest three-toques restaurant in Austria. It boasts an olive oil menu with 12 different oils as well as a wine list featuring 900 wines. The comprehensive spa includes three-scent grottoes. The Bellavista is a new 4-star apartment hotel, also right on the piste, which includes apartments for 2 to 6 people.
And, benvenuti a tutti, there is the 3-star Hotel Al gallo Forcello on the Italian side of the border and still only a five-minute walk from the ski-lifts. The other on-mountain village is Sonnleitn, where the 3-star Hotel Sonnleitn is located, near the base of the 4-person Sonnleitn chairlift.
There is a wide choice of hotels in nearby Hermagor – the 4-star Alpen Adria among the best with a super spa and good cuisine – just a few minutes by free skibus to the Millennium Express gondola. Also to be considered is the unusual and historic Schloss Hotel Lerchenhof at Hermagor full of rooms furnished with antiques and boasting its own ham smokehouse (and abattoir).
