Sankt Johann, to give the resort its proper German name, is a traditional Austrian market town in the North Tirol, situated just a 15-minute drive, or 7 minutes by the fastest train, from its more illustrious neighbour Kitzbühel. The town retains a traditional feel despite some modern development.

The ski area is relatively small, with just 42km of pistes in the immediate ski area. The high proportion of blue runs means St Johann is well suited to beginners with its excellent ski schools. Confident intermediates and advanced skiers will quickly exhaust the local skiing in a day or two, but there are plenty more ski areas nearby including KitzSki (Kitzbuhel, Kirchberg etc) and SkiWelt (Soll, Ellmau, Westendorf etc). Advanced skiers can also take advantage of the ski touring options in the nearby Wilder Kaiser.

St Johann is easily accessible from several major airports. Accommodation is noticeably cheaper than in some of the neighbouring ski resorts. The village doesn’t have a big après ski scene – just a handful of restaurants for visitors wishing to explore beyond their hotels or take an evening off from cooking in their self-catering apartments. Mountain dining options, however, are outstanding. St Johann has some of Tirol’s best mountain restaurants, including the Angereralm, run by the President of the Austrian Sommelier Association.

And lunching and skiing are not the only activities. There is paragliding, tobogganing and snow hiking too, and St Johann also has some of the best cross-country skiing in Austria. If that is not enough to exhaust you, there is ice skating near the centre of the town.
