Meiringen Ski School

The ski school employs up to 100 ski instructors at peak times and is located on the mountain at Bidmi. It’s also the meeting point for all ski school courses and events and convenient for the children’s Snow Garden and beginner slopes. The meeting points for beginners, intermediates and advanced ski school groups are beside the ski school office and signposted.

The ski school office is open daily from 9 am until 4:30 pm. To get there ride the cable car from Meiringen (Alpbach) to Hasliberg Reuti, then the gondola to Bidmi. It takes about 5 minutes to complete each ascent plus 2-3 minutes at each lift station. The ski school also has a desk in the tourist office in Meiringen which is open between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays only.

The ski school website is published in English and Dutch as well as German, but printed literature available locally is in the German language only. However, that’s no reflection on the linguistic abilities of the ski school; Roland Frutiger, the ski school director speaks excellent English and so do the majority of ski instructors. Register for lessons at the ski school offices or by phone by Sunday afternoon for beginner lessons which start on Monday.

The ski school tests which allocate skiers to groups according to their age and ability take place on Sunday afternoons between 13.00-14.30 or 13:30-14:45. Separate tests for boarders are from 11:30-13:15 and 14:00-15:45 also on Sundays. These times are also used to offer short taster courses for first-timers wanting to sample skiing and boarding, the cost of which includes equipment rental. Contact the ski school to register and to confirm times.

Ski Lessons for Children

The Swiss Ski League programme includes a Snow Garden for young children under five years of age accompanied by one parent and a ski instructor, a Snow Kids Village where children first learn to glide with skis parallel and a further ten specified courses for beginner, intermediates and advanced skiers including short turns, freestyle jumps, tricks and freeriding off-piste at the top end.

Ski school lessons for children include the Snow Garden kindergarten at Bidmi where children under five can spend 75 minutes getting used to snow and learn how to walk on skis and use the tow rope and T-bars ready to progress to the first stage of group lessons

Group skiing lessons for children are offered from 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00 Monday – Friday or from 10:00-13:30 including a 20-minute short break in a restaurant where children are given a drink. Lunch is not included in the price and children are allowed to bring a packed lunch.

There’s a choice of mountain restaurants close to the ski school and beginners area at Bidmi including a restaurant at the lift station which is specially for families with young children.

Ski Lessons for Adults

Adult group lessons are from 10:00-13:30 Monday – Friday. All group ski lessons are subject to a minimum group size of five. Group lessons in snowboarding, subject to a minimum of four, are offered from 10:00-12:00 and from 14:00-16:00 Monday – Friday. Beginner group lessons for skiers and boarders start only on Mondays.

For those wanting to accelerate their progress and try other snowsports the afternoon programme for skiers includes carving on (Mondays), an introduction to cross-country skiing (Tuesdays), show showing through the forest (Wednesdays) and deep-snow  (Thursdays),  The afternoon programme for boarders include park and rail (Mondays), freestyle (Tuesday), ski cross (Wednesdays) and deep-snow (Thursdays). The afternoon courses are available as an option and at an extra cost per day.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are also available for individuals or small groups on Saturdays and Sundays as well as during the week. Prices are charged by the hour for between 1-5 hours and up to a maximum of four people in a private group. Most instructors are busy Monday – Friday with group lessons so short private lessons often take place after 14:00 hours.
