The closest town to Mount Hutt ski area and most convenient place to stay is Methven (26km). Christchurch is over 100 km away. The last 13km from the main road is a quite daunting drive along Mt Hutt Skifield Road, making Mt Hutt ski area more difficult to reach than most.
Nearest International Airport
The main international airport on South Island and the nearest airport to Mount Hutt for skiers travelling from outside New Zealand is Christchurch (CHC). Auckland and Wellington international airports are on North Island.
Getting to Mount Hutt by Shuttle Bus
Methven Travel offers daily shuttle bus services from Methven and Christchurch to the ski area and between Christchurch, Christchurch International Airport and Methven village. Local shuttle bus services between Methven and Mt Hutt ski area are also provided by 4wd Transport.
Getting to Mount Hutt by Car
The 90km drive from Christchurch to Mt Hutt takes about 1 hour by car or shuttle bus via Route 73 (West Coast Road) to Darfield then Route 77 through Rakaia Gorge Road to Mt Hutt, then 24km more to drive from Mt Hutt to the ski area including the legendary 13km Mt Hutt Skifield Road. Snow chains are a must! From Methven to Mount Hutt ski area (26km) takes about 1 hour by shuttle bus or car. Head north on Main Street towards McKerrow Street then follow Mount Hutt Station Road (2km), Waimarama Road (7km), McLennans Bush Road (2km) and Rosehill Road (1km), then continue along the dramatic Mount Hutt Skifield Road (13km) which brings you slowly and dramatically to Mt Hutt ski area.
