Heiligenblut is not a party town, there’s no tea dancing on tables nor any discos or nightclubs of distinction. There are a few cafés and bars to hang out and have fun and a small number of restaurants serving traditional Alpine and Adriatic cuisine.

Other Activities in Heiligenblut

Other activities for skiers and non-skiers in winter include a 10-kilometre network of cross-country tracks plus tobogganing and ice-skating, snow-shoeing and winter hiking trails. Other off-slope activities include ice climbing, ice skating, ice curling, sleigh rides, tennis and squash but none of these is particularly obvious when strolling through the village.

Cross-country Skiing

Heiligenblut offers cross-country skiers a choice of four circuits, Fallbichlloipe (2km), Zubringer (2km), Sonnblickloipe (3km) partly illuminated in the evening and Glocknerloipe (8km). The Fallbichlloipe and Zubringer trails running along the banks of the river Moll are relatively flat and easily accessed from the village centre.

Grossglockner Plus Card

The Grossglockner Plus Card includes a variety of free and discounted excursions and adventures including guided access to ski terrain beyond the 55km of groomed trails. Available for €35.00 and can be purchased at the Tourist Office.

Ice climbing, ice skating, ice curling and sleigh rides

There is even an ice climbing park for the adventurous with instruction on hand (‘kiss the ice with the ice-axe, don’t smash it in’) from the Ski School (Tel: +43 4824 24642) as well as ice curling rinks and sleigh rides from Heiligenblut to the idyllic high-alpine village of Apriach arranged by Familie Wallner and lasting approximately three hours (Tel: +43 664 1221 890).

Night of the Stars at the Grossglockner

Join the Grossglockner lift company for a night-time gondola ride and star gazing from the summit of Schareck (2604m), followed by an easy winter hike; equipment provided.

Snowshoeing Tours with Nationalpark Ranger

Nature lovers should sign up for a guided snowshoeing tour with Ron Kapteyn. After retiring from the Dutch special services, Ron retrained as a National Park Ranger and offers hiking and snowshoeing tours in the forested slopes of the Kaponingtal to Biwak 2650m at Pfaffenberger Alm. The route chosen depending on fitness levels and time allowed, starting with a Mitsubishi 4WD experience, then snowshoeing and nature tour with answers to questions such as why do some trees grow beards, the easy way to light a fire in the forest in winter, how many thousand years old is that rock, why deer and other animals like to walk in snowshoe tracks and how to smell the sign of a fox. Stop off on the way back for refreshment at Gatternighof Lärchen Stubn; built next to the farm on the foundations of an old manure pit, but don’t let that put you off as platters of freshly cured meats, with onions, gherkin, tomato and cheese are delicious and the unobstructed view of the Mölltal and Obervellach are breathtaking. Swimming, Wellness, Tennis and Squash

To round off the other off-slope activities, the Hallenbad Heiligenblut (Tel: +44 4824 2001-24) includes an indoor public pool, sauna and solarium and the spa and wellness treatments at Nationalpark Lodge Grossglockner and Hotel Post are also available to non-residents. And the Hunquest Hotel features a squash court and three indoor tennis courts with lessons available from the Legerer Tennis Academy (Tel: +43 676 4627 458).

Tobogganing

Tobogganing on trails through snow-covered woods is available in Heiligenblut and most villages throughout the National Park region with trails varying between 1-3km, and the Heiligenblut Ortsteil Winkl toboggan run is sometimes floodlit and open until late in the evening.

Winter Walking Trails

Heiligenblut offers walkers a choice of eight winter walking trails. Distances between 1.5km and 7km and walking times ranging from 1-4 hours. Walking trails are signposted with three of the eight trails listed starting from the “village centre”. Another three trails start from the Panoramabahn, Rossbach and Schareck lift stations.
