St Moritz: The Most Glamorous Ski Resort in the Alps
60Engadin St. Moritz, the largest winter sports region in Switzerland, enchants visitors with its beautiful landscape, its glamour and its harmonious balance of nature and tradition. What mountains. What space. What light!
High-alpine yet facing the sunny south, the Engadin St. Moritz region looks as if it has been crafted by an artist’s hands. Snow-blanketed mountains soar to heights of over 4,000 metres (13,000 ft), creating an awe-inspiring backdrop to the valley. With its four main peaks and 350 kilometres (217 miles) of pistes, Engadin St. Moritz is one of the most extensive winter sport regions in Switzerland – not to mention one of the most beautiful.
In this magnificent mountain world it is no surprise that winter sports were invented here. Today, Engadin St. Moritz remains a dream destination for fans of snow and ice sports, an important venue for Ski World Cup races, and a much talked-about host of Winter Olympic Games and international competitions, and once again St. Moritz is a candidate to host the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2017.
Thanks to an altitude range of between 1,800 and 3,303 metres (5,906?10,837 ft), snow is guaranteed. Furthermore, the highly modern ski lifts ensure a minimum of waiting time and a maximum of skiing time in a region that is renowned for its variety. A carving paradise, freeride slopes, spacious nursery areas and a glacier downhill run are just some of the attractions that lure snow sport afficionados from every direction. When it comes to snow, Engadin St. Moritz has it all; after all, it was here that, according to the legend, winter tourism was born some 150 years ago.
Engadin St Moritz features three distinctly different ski areas for your enjoyment:
Corviglia for glamour: the mountain on St. Moritz’s doorstep and its summit, Piz Nair (3,057m/10,030ft), is home to World Cup races, gourmet restaurants and the latest trends in snow sports. As the official Chillout Piste, the Paradiso promises the ultimate in relaxed riding.
Corvatsch for sport: even highly experienced skiers and snowboarders rave about the runs from the highest-altitude summit station in the Eastern Alps (3,303m/10,837ft) – and go wild about the longest floodlit night run in Switzerland. The new Slow Slope promotes leisurely skiing and safety on the ski pistes, similar to Corviglia’s ‘Chillout Piste’
Diavolezza for drama: the “ballroom of the Alps” has a special treat that offers a 45-minute fitness test on the 10-kilometre (6-mile) glacier run down to Morteratsch. Just across the valley, directly opposite Diavolezza, lie the legendary slopes of Lagalb, with the most challenging piste in the whole of the Engadin.
