Getting to Ellmau by Rail
The nearest main train stations to Ellmau are Worgl (10km), Kufstein (10km) and St Johann in Tirol (21km) with regular post bus services running from train stations to Soll, Scheffau, Ellmau and Going. Depending on train times and connections you could sometimes end up waiting up to an hour for the next bus in which case it’s easier and quicker to take a taxi.
Innsbruck airport – Innsbruck Hbf – Worgl – Ellmau is about 1 hour 45 minutes by bus and train including a 15 minute bus journey from the airport to Innsbruck main train station and 30 minutes by bus from Worgl to Ellmau, depending on departure times and connection. Allow 2 hours total.
Munich airport – Munchen Ost – Worgl – Ellmau is 2 hours or more by train depending on departure times and connections then a 30 minute bus ride from Worgl to Ellmau but you also need to allow for time waiting the bus (up to an hour) from Worgl to Ellmau. Allow 3½ – 4 hours total.
Salzburg airport – Salzburg Hbf – Worgl or St Johann in Tirol – Ellmau by bus and train takes about 2 hours including a 25 minute bus ride from the airport to the main train station in Salzburg, then a further 30-40 minutes by bus from Worgl or St Johann. Driving to Ellmau
No matter which airport or direction you are coming from, there are fast motorways (E52/E60 from north east and E45/E60 from south west) running into the Tirol and then it’s just 8-10km from the nearest motorway exit to Ellmau. And having a car is useful if you want to explore other resorts.
Innsbruck airport – 80km from Ellmau. From the airport follow signs for Salzburg/Gotzens E60/A12/A13, continuing along the A12 for approximately 60km to Worgl Ost exit 17 then follow B178 sign-posted Sankt Johann in Tirol for 15km to Ellmau.
Munich airport – 150km from Ellmau. From the airport follow signs for Munchen / A9 then A99/A8 sign-posted Salzburg / Innsbruck then follow the A8/A93 to Innsbruck / Kufstein as far as Kufstein Sud (exit 6) then follow the B173 sign-posted Sankt Johann in Tirol for a further 13km to Ellmau
Salzburg airport – 190km from Ellmau. From the airport follow signs for Munchen / Innsbruck / A10 / Villach continue on A8/A93/A12 following signs for Innsbruck/Kufstein as far as Kufstein Sud (exit 6) then follow the B173 direction Sankt Johann in Tirol for approximately 8km to Allmau.
When hiring a car in winter ensure that the car has winter tyres (or snow chains), otherwise you risk having an accident, being fined and your car hire insurance will be invalidated! If flying back from Munich allow extra time to get to the airport if driving back on a Sunday afternoon or evening.
