Accommodation in Saalbach
Saalbach is prettier and more compact than Hinterglemm, but both share the same boisterous apres-ski scene which starts on the slopes above the bus-linked villages, and continues late into the night in countless bars, restaurants and clubs. If you want somewhere quieter, try Fieberbrunn, which suits keen skiers; or Leogang, which is a good resort for combining skiing with other activities like winter hikes and ice skating.

Saalbach

Saalbach is an attractive village with a compact pedestrianised centre mostly composed of low-rise traditional buildings clustered around a lovely old onion-dome church. Most of the accommodation is within walking distance of the centre which is where the main lift-stations are, as well as most of the bars, restaurants and clubs, but there are a few outlying parts of the resort which are a bus-ride away. Saalbach has a well-deserved reputation for lively apres-ski and cosmopolitan nightlife.
Hinterglemm

Hinterglemm is narrower than Saalbach but a lot longer: the pedestrianised high street at its centre seems to go on for ever if you’re walking from one end to the other. Hinterglemm also has less charm than Saalbach but it shares the same apres-ski scene and there are good bus links between the two villages.
Leogang

Leogang is in a picturesque valley but it’s very spaced out, with a mix of smart hotels and even smarter holiday homes. Whereas Saalbach and Hinterglemm stage raves and pop concerts, Leogang hosts a jazz festival. Leogang’s location at one end of the Skicircus, and only connected to the rest of the ski area by a series of short runs and lifts on Kleiner Assitz, makes Leogang a less convenient base for keen skiers than Fieberbrunn, but it has some very nice walks, good ice skating and superb mountain restaurants.
Fieberbrunn

Hotel Alte Post in the centre of Fieberbrunn
Compared to Saalbach and Hinterglemm, Fieberbrunn is quiet and family-friendly but it also attracts keen skiers, because its sector has the best freeride in the Skicircus (Fieberbrunn is a regular venue on the Freeride World Tour) and its local slopes have some of the best red runs in the ski area. Fieberbrunn’s attractive centre is a 15 minute walk from the lifts and slopes, but frequent free buses complete the journey in 3 minutes. The 4 star Hotel Alte Post in the centre of the village, below the 15th century parish church and overlooking the main plaza, is recommended – it even has its own swimming pool.
