Hotel le Samoyède
Morzine’s Hotel Samoyède holds a 3-star rating and is locally renowned as one of the town’s top establishments, not least because of its prime position on the central square. The proprietors, a Madame and Monsieur Baud-Pachon, keep a traditional property which enjoys ample modern embellishments, as well as scenic views of the Morzine ski slopes and the peaks of Avoriaz.
Rooms and Suites
Rooms at the Samoyède benefit from a simple yet effective layout. The entryway houses the bathroom and water closet, both of which are charmingly decorated in a blend of traditional wooden fixtures and contemporary facilities. The plush beds dominate the centre of the room, which then gives way to the comfortable living area, complete with sofa, desk, and flat-screen TV. The large screen doors onto the balcony provide plenty natural light, and the balcony-terrace itself offers views of the infringing mountains and surrounding locale. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the building and provided on arrival.
Restaurant and Bar
The hotel is home to a locally reputable gourmet restaurant “L’atelier d’Alexandre” and a bar of similar popularity “La Taverne”. L’atelier d’Alexandre is fully furnished in soft, light wood, which creates a rustic yet refined environment, befitting the cuisine on offer. The menu ranges from local meat in a variety of delicate forms, to freshwater fish from neighbouring lakes, to a selection of cheeses from regional farms. As a testament to the fresh quality of the ingredients, occasional aperitifs of varying origin are offered. The resident staff conducts itself with a great deal of professionalism, which is evident in its efficient service and wide knowledge of the region, as well as of the restaurant’s extensive wine selection.
The Bar La Taverne is popular in Morzine for its alternative après-ski atmosphere, which contrasts the clubs higher up in town with its distinctively mellow atmosphere. The friendly staff serves a variety of whiskies and cocktails to a high standard, which may be enjoyed on the terrace under a heated canopy. The location of the property allows for drinks to be enjoyed in direct view of the bell tower in the town square, as well as other central entertainments.
Wellness and Spa
In contrast to the hotel’s wider traditional countenance is the subterranean Spa and relax area. Guests are invited to make use of ample recliner seating, which are flanked by an open-plan shower, a large hot-tub, sauna, steam room, and Hammam [soon to be fully refurbished at time of writing]. The warmth and seclusion of the spa offers ideal opportunities for unwinding after a days’ skiing, and is effortlessly accessible from the residential floors by a direct elevator.
Ski Facilities
A room at the Samoyede entitles the guest to use of the on-site ski storage room, complete with heated boot-drying. The nearest ski bus to the Avoriaz ski area is just two minutes’ walk from the door of the hotel. Alternative cable cars to the Morzine and Super-Morzine ski areas are under 5 minutes’ walk through the charming town centre.
Skiing in Morzine
The Samoyède’s address enables effortless access to the three local ski areas, with runs ranging from family-friendly nursery slopes, to black runs fit for an expert. Morzine-Avoriaz’s inclusion in the Portes du Soleil makes it a gateway for exploration further afield.
