Getting to Cortina d’Ampezzo by Rail
There used to be a train line through Cortina and up to Dobbiacco to the north, but it’s now a big cross country ski route over the dramatic pass. The nearest rail links are now Calalzo to the south (35km) and Dobbiacco to the north (32km), It’s a 2 hour 30 min by Trenitalia rail from Venezia Mestre to Calalzo then 45 minutes (32 km) by bus from Calalzo via Pieve di Cadore to Cortina.
Driving to Cortina d’Ampezzo
From Venice Marco Polo Airport follow the A27 partial toll road to Ponte Nelle Alpi (90km) then exit the motorway and follow the SS51 (58km) to Cortina d’Ampezzo. From Treviso airport, north of Venice, head east on SR53 / SR89 as far as the A27 (10km) then follow the A27/SS51 as above.
From or through Austria take the A12/E60 motorway to Knoten Innsbruck then follow signs for A13/E45 toward Italy/Bozen/Brenner/Innsbruck-Süd/E533. Follow the E45 motorway across the Brenner Pass into Italy towards Bressanone Brixen then follow E66/SS49/SP244 and signs for Cortina d’Ampezzo.
If dirving across the Brenner Pass be sure to stop at the Plessi Museum service station at the border between Austria and Italy. Designed by Carlo Costa, the innovative architectural building hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to the art of Fabrizio Plessi (b. 1940), one of the most internationally regarded and renowned contemporary Italian masters.
