Learn to Ski in Val Gardena
Val Gardena has a good choice of ski schools and private ski instructors. There are nursery slopes at the edge of the resort in Val Gardena and in Santa Cristina most of the beginner’s slopes are one lift up the mountain at Monte Pana. 30% of the valley ski slopes are categorised as easy blue runs – the largest concentration is at Alpe di Siusi above Ortisei. For experienced skiers, there are plenty of off-piste mountain guides.

Val Gardena Ski Schools
The Val Gardena region offers a choice of ski schools in each village. Selva, Santa Christina and Ortisei each have two ski schools and the whole of the large Alpe di Siusi area seems to have evolved entirely around the needs of novice skiers.

Val Gardena Mountain Guides
Although the Val Gardena ski area is best for intermediate piste skiers, there are a few off-piste itineraries for free-riders that mountain guides can show you, including the famous Val Mezdi which starts in Val di Fassa (the ski area next to Val Gardena on the Sella Ronda green anti-clockwise route) and ends in Alta Badia (the ski area next to Val Gardena on the Sella Ronda orange clockwise route).
Some of the itineraries are not extreme and can be skied by the most competent skiers and riders, with the spectacular scenery being a significant part of the appeal. There are also some seriously steep routes and the option for multi-day trips, overnighting in mountain refuges.
Skiing off-piste without a guide is not recommended. Not only is the terrain dangerous but across Italy, there are laws which are very hostile to free-riders without professional guides.
