Accommodation in Gstaad

While Gstaad is renowned for its 5-star superior hotels, most notably the Gstaad Palace, the Gstaad holiday region features over 250 accommodations, including more than 40 hotels, more than 150 apartments, five mountain inns, and a dozen bed and breakfast properties. Just nine of the 250+ properties are 5-star.

Where to Stay in Gstaad?

When deciding where to stay, it helps to know that Rougemont, Saanen, Gstaad, Schonried, Saanenmoser, and Zweisimmen are all connected by rail. Trains running back and forth from Montreux to Zweisimmen also allow you to switch between the two main ski areas east and west of Gstaad.

Gstaad alone boasts over 60 properties, including 15 hotels, 37 apartments, five individual chalets, and six guesthouses offering bed and breakfast. Around 200 more properties can be found in nearly a dozen Saanenland villages within a 5 to 15-km radius of Gstaad. A free ski bus service runs between Gstaad and Saanen, and Schonried, Saanenmoser, and Zweisimmen provide direct access to Gstaad’s largest and most family-friendly ski area.

While Gstaad is enchanting in many ways, other villages like Schönried and Saanenmöser provide a broader selection of more affordable accommodation. They also offer easier access to the largest ski area, and just 5-10 km distance by train or car ensures you are close enough to experience some of Gstaad’s charm. Staying in Zweisimmen may still provide a delightful skiing holiday, but it’s 30 minutes from Gstaad.

Whatever category of accommodations you choose, the busiest times in winter – Christmas, New Year and February – get booked up quite quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment.

5-star Hotels in Gstaad

The Alpina Gstaad, Gstaad Palace, Le Grand Bellevue Gstaad, and The Park are members of the Swiss Deluxe Association of 39 of Switzerland’s most prestigious 5-star hotels.

While the standout Gstaad Palace has welcomed royalty and the rich and famous since it opened in 1913, the equally luxurious Alpina Gstaad, which opened in 2012, boasts two Michelin one-star restaurants and is arguably now the leading 5-star Superior hotel in Gstaad. Le Grand Bellevue is similarly grand but more old-fashioned than the competition, and the Park Gstaad has closed for a significant renovation and is expected to reopen in 2027 as the Four Seasons Hotel Gstaad. The newer Ultima Hotel Gstaad, one of nine exceptional properties in the Ultima collection, is just a short walk from Gstaad’s Eggli ski lift.

One level down but still 5-star, and just 5km from Gstaad, the ERMITAGE Wellness & Spa Hotel Schonried offers 5-star accommodation and amenities for roughly half the price of a 5-star superior stay in Gstaad.

4-star Hotels in Gstaad

Officially 4-star but in a different league, the Hotel Olden is an exceptional boutique hotel with many 5-star manifestations and is perfectly located on Gstaad’s central promenade. More down to earth, the Hotel Arc-en-Ciel Gstaad is conveniently located next to the Gstaad-Eggli ski lift, and The Mansard Gstaad is a stylish new 4-star hotel with a rooftop bar in downtown Gstaad. If you prefer somewhere quieter, Hotel Le Grand Chalet Gstaad offers 4-star accommodation and an award-winning gourmet restaurant in a tranquil hill-top location out of town.

The splendid 4-star HUUS Gstaad in Saanen, just 3km from Gstaad, has a lively vibe, including an in-house DJ, which makes up for the relative lack of off-mountain apres-ski elsewhere in Gstaad. A little further away, good 4-star properties in Schonried and Saanenmoser include the Golf Hotel Les Hauts de Gstaad, which is a good option for families prioritising skiing.

3-star and 2-star Hotels in Gstaad

For 3-star accommodation in Gstaad, Posthotel Rossli is an excellent hotel/restaurant in the oldest part of the village, and the charming Hotel Alphorn is just a short walk from Gstaad’s Eggli lift station. The Sporthotel Victoria Gstaad is a more modest 3-star hotel with a pizzeria restaurant just a 2-minute walk from the train station.

More 3-star options in nearby villages include the modest Hotel Landhaus, which is next to the train station in Saanen; the stylish, 3-star superior Hotel Spitzhorn, which is also in Saanen; and the Kernen family-owned 3-star hotels, the Hotel Kernen in Schönried and the Hotel des Alpes in Saanenmöser. Both offer nicely furnished rooms and good restaurants.

Also, the 2-star Le Petit Relais, conveniently located next to the Saanersloch gondola lift in Saanenmoser, is a great budget option for keen skiers.
