Getting to Aspen Snowmass
Visitors to Aspen can fly into Denver International Airport (183 miles away) or Aspen-Pitkin which is also known as ‘Sardy Field’, (3 miles away) or Eagle County which is also known as Eagle-Vail or Vail/Eagle Airport (70 miles away). There are connecting flights from Denver to Aspen-Pitkin and Eagle County, and you can also book transfers by road or hire a car.
Nearest Airports to Aspen Snowmass
Flying into the area is straightforward as the Aspen/Pitkin County airport (ASE) is conveniently located just 4 miles West / 10 minutes’ drive to the center of Aspen’s city core, or 15 miles East / 15 minutes’ drive to the heart of Snowmass. The airport is served by American, Delta, and United with daily direct flights from the following major hubs: Atlanta (ATL), Denver (DEN), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Phoenix (PHX), Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO). As with most mountain destinations, allow for possible weather-related delays when estimating arrival or departure times. The airport has car rentals available if you need one for your stay in the area.
If you don’t want to fly into Aspen, you can fly into Vail’s Eagle Country Airport or Denver, and drive either 70 or 200 miles (respectively) West on i-70. However, weather and traffic will determine if that trip takes you 1.5 or 3.5 hours (respectively) or multiples thereof. You’ll also have to drive through several passes on i-70 that can be quite dangerous in a storm, so be cautious.
Driving to Aspen in Winter
It’s not possible to drive into Aspen in the winter from the East as Independence Pass is closed from October through May. However, it is worth a return trip to the area in the summer to explore Independence Pass, Maroon Bells, and many other areas that are not accessible in winter.
