Sun Valley Inn

The Sun Valley Inn’s relaxed old world elegance transports guests to the golden age of skiing. The glass-enclosed 102-degree swimming pool with views of Bald Mountain and the Sun Valley Lodge is a highlight.

Located in the heart of the Sun Valley village, the Sun Valley Inn is understated elegance at its best. The Sun Valley Inn is a slightly less expensive alternative to the Sun Valley Lodge, but offers a very similar experience. In fact, besides the fact that the Inn has a smaller and less impressive lobby, guests will notice little different between the Inn and the Lodge. The two properties are located a short walk apart.

Originally known as the Challenger Inn, the inn retained that name into the 1970’s before becoming the Sun Valley Inn. The guest rooms have been recently remodeled and the decor mimics that of the Lodge; both properties are decored with plush carpeting, European fabrics and ornate fixtures – something rarely seen in the ski world outside Continental Europe itself.

The hotel has two restaurant options – the historic Ram Restaurant which has been serving guests since the Inn opened in 1937 and the family-friendly Lobbly Lounge which offers light fare.

The highlight of any guest’s stay at the Sun Valley Inn is likely to be the Inn’s heated outdoor pool. In truth, because the pool is heated to a balmy 102 degrees, it’s more like a massive hot tub without the bubbles. Enclosed by glass to keep out the winder, the pool at the Sun Valley Inn looks at out the ski trails on Baldy and over a meadow to the Lodge. One notable difference between the Lodge and the Inn is that cocktail service is not available while sitting in the Inn’s outdoor pool, while such service is available at the Lodge. We survived.

For those who love the history of the sport or prefer a more elegant choice in accommodation, a visit to the Sun Valley Inn in a must.
